SKATING CARNIVAL
SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDED. The fancy dress skating carnival, which was being held in aid of the Red Cross and Soldiers’ Club Funds, was drawn to a successful conclusion on Saturday evening in the presence of the biggest crowd of the season. The Dominion Band supplied the music while the Travellers' Troubadours were forward In strong force an# rendered several very acceptable items in capital style. The piano for the concert programme was very kindly lent by the Bristol. Considerable merriment was also caused by the Travellers In their efforts to skate. During the evening the final results of the voting in the several competitions 'were announced and received with applause. Following are the results, names being in order of merit: Best fancy costume. Miss Stead (The Forum), Miss McNaught. —. Henry, K. Russell (Indian moto-cyclo). Comic dress, Mr Geoff. Stewart (Charlie Chaplin), “Looking for his Wife,” "Old Lady.” (It is worthy of note that, in this competition, ••Charlie Chaplin” polled 82 per cent, of the tbtal votes recorded.) Most original costume, Mr A. Hawley (The morning after the nlglft before', Mr Colin McDonald (Stingaree), Mr Lyons (News •’Stamp”), “Looking for his Wife.' Best poster. News "Stamp” (Mr Lyons). The Forum (Miss Stead), Broad,- Small and Co. (Miss Friend), Chinese laundry. Most ' graceful lady skater, Mrs Allen, Miss Richards, Miss Brewer, Miss Price. Most graceful gentleman skater, Mr Colin McDonald, Mr H. Hannah, Mr H, Gunii, Mr Geoff. Stewart. The teams' competition was one which created great interest, and the winning combination received quite an ovation when the decision was annouced. The position of the teams by the final vote was:— .* Snowdops • • * Nurses .. .. 2 Pyjama Girls 2 A half-mile race, for the championship of Southland, between the Lyons’, father and son, was won by the latter, by the , full length of the straight, amidst great applause. The bunch of trench flowers submitted for sale by Mr W. E. Taylor was sold and re-sold until £S 5/- had been netted, while a shower brought in almost another £5. Bidders for the flowers can pay the secretary (Mr McDonald), at the United Insurance Co.’s Office, Esk street, where prizc-winneps can also obtain their prizes. The Ladies' Committee desires to thank, all those who donated sweets, also Messrs Pasco and Dixon for oysters supplied, Mr Dyer who made the soup, the soft drink workers, the sweet sellers, and the Scoutmaster and Scouts. As a result of the four nights’ carnival, the Red Cross Society and the Soldiers’ Club will each benefit to the extent of about £135, for which the thanks of the forces are due to the energetic sommittees. whose unbounded enthusiasm was responsible for making the carnival •UC& a success.
