TENNIS

(Bw “Deuce.”) The Invercargill Cub's activities having practically come to an end for the season, it is interesting at this stage to review the club’s competitions, which have this year been far from uninteresting. In annexing the championship singles, the handicap singles and the combined doubles A, K, Hawley has achieved a record which has only been equalled once before. That was in 190S-9, when Mr F. 'fucker carried away the laurels.

The Invercargill Club is undoubtedly lucky to obtain a player of his merit. In the championship, which he also won last year, Vie won each round with ease, his scores reading:—lst round against Field. 6—3, 6—l; 2nd against W. Hodges, 6—4, B—4; and the final against Jones, 6—o, 6-—3. By winning the handicap singles (TO points up) with a handicap of 15 points behind scratch, the limit man receiving 20. is no mean foal. In the combined doubles with Miss Field, Hawley was placed on the owe 5 mark, (he limit pair receiving 30. The writer was sorry to hear that Hawley struck an of£ day when playing for Southland against Otago and is informed he did not play anything like his usual game. I understand lie has been selected to play in the Canterbury “Varsity” team which is going to play Auckland ’Varsity at Easter, and I hope to hear good results of ids play there.

Among tlie other players in the championship, Jones showed good form, winning all his rounds fairly easily and meeting such steady players as w. .1. Hawley, whom he defeated 4 -6. 6—3, 6—4, and Goldsmith 6—3, 6—2. In the

final, however, he did not play his usual" game and made no figure of it against the winner.’

Goldsmith has not been playing with his usual dash this season, and it is something unusual not to find his name among the winners of one of the tournaments. However, he succeeded in getting into the finals with Field in the handicap doubles and they put up a good game against Hodges and Jones. In the combined doubles playing, with Miss Tucker, they reached the semi-finals,-de-spite the large handicaps of 20 behind scratch, the limit pair receiving 30, which is a very creditable performance.

it is very pleasing to sec an old member of the club in the person of Mr Wilson Hodges once again coming out after a spell of several years and playing with marked success. He and Jones won the men's doubles fairly easily, and ho was a.lso runner-up to A. K. Hawley, who only lie&t him by $ points in the handicap singles. I witnessed the match he played with Hawley in the championship, and offer him my congratulations on the steady game he put up. But condition told in the finish and ho succumbed to the younger player after giving him the toughest match he had to play in this event.

A keener devotee of the game than IV. ,1. Ha v. ley would he hard to find, and a. glance at the results of the club tournaments will show that he had the misfortune to strike very solid opponents in tlie early stages of all his events. I do not think there is a more accurate placer in the club. Of the other players in the A grade games those who showed consistent form were H. Featherston, who reached the semi-finals in the singles and the final with Miss A. Bearcll in the combined doubles. R. L. Printz, T. B. Rowe. R, B. Paws. T. Field, and several others, of whom pressure of space will not permit a more detailed account.

The ladies' events all drew good entries, and sound, keen play was the result, The championship was won by Miss \V. Tucker, who has annexed, this event for many years in succession. Ft is interesting to note that out. of a total of 42 games which she played in the four rounds of the championship she only lost fi. which is a splendid performance. It is to be much regretted that Southland's leading lady player was unfortunately unable to make the trip to Dunedin with the Southland team.

In tlie opinion of the Writer the player who has improved more among the ladies is Miss M. Field. Miss Field is a comparatively new player and she lias demonstrated her ability in no uncertain manner, as a glance al tne results of the club tournaments will show. She plays a hard, fust game., and with more experience will undoubtedly make a pood player. The runner-up in the cha mpioii'-h ip. .Miss Carswell, has In the writer's mind shown steady improvement. Her game is very consistent. and she can .generally be relied upon in a match to keep her opponents busy. It is a pleasure to see Mrs J. Callender still playing her usual steady game and generally managing to keep her opponents more than busy. She played with wiih considerable success in the tournaments. reaching rhe semi-fina.l.s in the doubles and championship. Miss Hack worth succeeded in annexing the ladies' doubles with Miss Gardner. and is iu the final of the singles, where she has to meet Miss Field. As both are on the same mark a very close game should result. Miss flaokworth plavs a very sound game, and 1 am pleased to see the steady improvement she has been making.

Miss A. Gardner is another player who has shown considerably improved form during t.he past season, and her success in the ladies' doubles with Miss Hackworth was well deserved.

Miss Boudon has played Iter usual game and has achieved a fair amount nt success, reaching the semi-finals in the singles and the final in the doubles. ft is lo he regretted that -Mrs Be.wis. who was playing in good form at. (lie commemhnpn I of the season, had t.o withdraw from the tournaments owing to a sprained ankle and I trust she will soon be able to resume playing. The final of the men’s B grade singles has not yet been played and it rests between G. Henderson and K. Scandrett. During the season t have noticed considerable improvement among the fol-lowing:—-T. Koyiis, E. Scandrett. A. .f. Brass. W. Brand ford. IT. W. Macdonald, and Q. Christophers. With the exception of these 1 regret to have to state that the remaining players appear to take little interest in the game. This is a pity, as younger players who show any ability are always in demand for the I A grade, and it is only by keen com- ( petition that they can be brought to I light. . fn the ladies’ B grade singles, foi Which a rather disappointing entry was received (only hi. Miss Fleming, who received 20, won with a bit to spare. Owing to the fact that two of the comIpetitors in this tournament scratched it 1 only left 6 matches to ho played alto- | gether. 1 regret Hint I cannot report I much improvement in (he play of tho R grade ladies, with perhaps Hie exj ception of the winner. Miss 1‘ leming, | and the runner-up. .Miss Bogan. There seems to be a tendency among them to treat Hie game too much in the nature of a joke. They appear to lack the spirit, of competition, which is Hie backbone of all games, and do not appear to take a keen interest in it. There is no reason, if they would only set their minds to it. why they should not he able to hold their own against the other clubs in Southland, hut 1 regret to say the reverse has been the case. It is hoped that next season they will buck up and place the club’s B grade team on a much higher standard. I RFSFLTS OF MATCHER.
