Received March 24, 5.25 p.m. The Times editorially says: The surrender of Przemysl is the most welcome and important episode of the war since tho New Year. We congratulate the Russians on their new vindication of their prowess and invincible determination, which will stimulate tlie whole of tlie Allies to more vigorous efforts. The end of tlie siege, coinciding with the end of winter, ought quickly to result in a general clearing up in East Galicia. AROUND FRZEMYSL FORTRESSES LIKE VOLCANOES GARRISON GNAW STRAPS PETROGRAD, March 21. Received March 24. 8.25 p.m. A correspondent proceeding from Lemberg towards Przemysl saw the fortresses round tho town burning like a circle of volcanoes. From tlie southern and western sectors came a succession of violent explosion, with dense smoke, os the Austrians blew up tlie ammunition stores. When the Russians heard the explosion they rushed past the forts and occupied the Inner sectors. The Austrians meanwhile shot their horses to prevent them falling in to tiie Russians' hands. Then the members of Parliament announced the surrender of the town. Many of the garrison dropped from exhaustion and some had not enougii strength to leave the trenches.
Most of them had gnawed straps to keep themselves alive. Twenty thousand wounded were among the prisoners. The town is intact, the outskirts alone having suffered. AUSTRIAN REPORT ALLEGED VICTORIES AMSTERDAM, Marcli 24. Received Marcli 25, 1.30 a.m. An Austrian official statement claims to have repulsed violent Russian attacks at Uszok Pass, capturing 3300 men and also driving the Russians from a height near Yskow, capturing 600 men.
