Prior T'o returning to Kngland it is Karl Grey’s intention to visit San Francisco. A Sydney cablegram records the death of Captain James Hamilton, aged seventy-eight years. He was formerly a well known New Zealand trader. A New York cable records the marriage of Miss Billie Burke, the well known actress, to Air Horenz Zie-gfeld, theatrical manager.

Mr AV. A. Ott was nominated yesterday for the position of Mayor, his candidature being proposed and seconded by Messrs AV. N. Stirling and A. F. Hawke respectively. By an advertisement this morning Mr Ott’s committee and supporters are invited to meet to-morrow evening. Mr Ott will address the electors next AV'odnesday evening. An accident Maud Allan has caused an interruption to iter Dunedin season. While dancing on Mondayevening Miss Allan strained a leg muscle. and her medical attendant ordered her complete rest and p course of mas-s-age. The performances advertised for Tuesday. AVodnesday. Thursday and Friday were cancelled, but it is anticipated that the famous classic dancer will hare recovered by Saturday, when a special performance will he given. At Athol on Wednesday of last week, a wedding of considerable interest took place. The contracting parties were -Miss Mary Parker, second daughter of Mr and Mrs K. J. ft. Parker, of Athol, and Mr W. J. Eunson. of Jnvorcargill. The bride, who was given away hy her father, was attired in a very becoming dress. Miss Rachel Parker acted as bridesmaid whilst Mr Alex. Eunsou performed the duties of best man. The happy little ceremony took place at the residence of the bride's parents, where also a sumptuous wedding repast was partaken of.

Mr Harold Beauchamp has been selected by the directorate of the Australian Mutual Provident Society to represent the New Zealand policy-holders at (he annual meeting of tho society lo he held in Sydney about the end of this month. Mr Beauchamp leaves for Australia . on Kriday. April 24. Lady Ward is staying with her daughter. Mrs 15. B. Wood, in Chris'lchurch. Mr Edward Collins, the well-known ami popular driver on the Nightcaps branch for many years, has been transferred to the Bluff, and leaves AVairio next Saturday. AVe understand that Mr Collins applied for the transfer so as to he nearer his son. who is employed in Invercargill. During his long residence in the district. Mr Collins has proved himself a capable and popular railway servant, and will be much missed up and (town the line. A AA'el I ington telegram announces that the position of designing engineer in the Public Works' Department, for which applications were invited last month, has been conferred on Mr J. E. L. Cull, at present employed in the engineering department of the Auckland Harbour Board. Mr Cull will act as one of the assistants to Die Engineer-in-Chief, principally In connection with the designing or structures. The deatii is announced of Sir Wm. Whyte, vice-president of the CanadianPacific Railway, aged sixty-six years. Sir AVilliarn died at Los Angeles, California.

The Primate of New Zealand (Bishop Nevilll has received a communication from Bishop Tuttle, of America, intimating that he has in hand the duty of selecting and appointing some representative bishop of the Church in the I’nited States to come to New Zealand in 1913 for the centennial celebration of the introduction of Christianity into this country. The Primate is personally much pleased to receive this letter, inasmuch as it recalls to liis mind the fact that in ISTO lie was associated with Bishop Tuttle in laying the foundation stone of the drst Christian Church in Mormon City.
