Willi regard to the lire at St. Louis six men are known to he dead, and dozens are not accounted for. Forty were injured. When the firemen arrived the flames were shooting out of the windows. Some men jumped to the pavements. and other lowered themselves by Die bed clothes. The fire fighters were imprilled frequently by falling walls. A youthful telephone operator remained at his post alarming the guests through hell calls. Many acknowledged that he saved their lives, otherwise they would have slept. Boilers in the basements exploded, deluging the rooms with steam. LATER. The death roll is definitely fixed thirty-five. MANY' NARROW ESCAPES. e FIREMEN INJURED. NEW YORK. March 10. Received March 30, 3 0.2. r > p.m. Tli ere were many dramatic escapes at the St. Louis fire. Twelve men tied shirts and descended from the fifth lloor on to an adjoining roof, while another man leaped a ten feet chasm which separated two building. and escaped with minor bruises. Most of the escapees wore their night attire only. The manager of the Athletic Club refused to leave the building until ho had given the alarm to everyone staying tli ere. Several firemen were injured by falling walls.
