FIGHTING THU AIR FOE. IRON DUKE'S LATEST EQUIPMENT. (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) LOXDOX. March 9. Received March 10. 3.10 p.m. The first appearance of guns for use against air craft on the British (loot was made on PI.M.S. Iron Duke, which is going to the manoeuvres to test two guns throwing a 121b highly explosive shell. The effective range is 7000 yards, and although the object may not he hit it is believed that the explosion will he .sufficient to bring down the aeroplane. The Iron Duke is also introducing a six inch torpedo battery. The latest battleships are dispensing with the torpedo defence net, known as the "crinoline." which is easily penetrated by the latest torpedoes, and therefore useless .and obsolete. The Jack Tars are not regretful of this as "out nets" was an unpopular order, involving a laborious task.
