Pickles, who has taken Hawker’s place In the Daily Mail race for £SOOO, attempted to resume at five to-day, but after a short flight dropped into the sea. The machine became waterlogged, and Pickles and Kottper wore in a perilous position when boats rescued them. The sea-plane will be sent back to Southampton for re-starting. Owing to the heavy swell at Yarmouth. the floats of the sna-plane became waterlogged, and It drifted seawards. Tho engine stopped, and the pilot and mechanic Imperilled, but were rescued after fifteen minutes' buffeting. The engine wa.s flooded. Besides suffering from sunstroke. Harry Hawker has severely strained his eyes through discarding goggles, and is suffering from head pains, induced through hi? not using a silencer on the engine. It is doubtful if McLean will start in the contest owing to continued engine troubles with his Short bi-plane. HAWKER WILL START. LONDON, August 19.
