GARSTON NOTES

In sympathy with other parts, we are experiencing wet and broken weather, which is greatly , retarding all outdoor work. One or- two- -farmem have stuff in stock still, and some to cut. Threshing is being slowly carried out, as the shifting is very slow on account of the. soft ground. The late snows have effectively closed, the . Garston-Nevis Koad until the spring. There is a greater depth of snow on the high country than has been the oase for many years. Recently a dance in aid of the library funds was held here. Though the weather wag ,ve.rv unfavourable fpr the purpose, the effort was a decided success, both from a social and financial point of view. The ladies contributed the refreshments gratis, and right well they performed their part, the liberality of the supply being equal to its excellence. The library people are also deeply indebted to Messrs J. and E. Soper, who supplied excellent dance music free of Charge, assisted by Master Frank Soper on the piano, which was kindly lent by Mrs Peters for the occasion. Songs were contributed at intervals by Miss A. Soper, Miss Newton, and Mr C. Aitcheson. Miss Shaughnessy danced an Irish Jig with professional correctness, and was warmly applauded. Dancing terminated only with ,the coming of the small hours of the morning. The Chinaman, who got his leg caught in the suction pipe of the Nokomai .Sluicing Co.'s claim, died in Dunedin, after undergoing amputation of the limb.
