IMPOUNDED CATTLE.
To the Editor. Sir, —It was with pleasure that I read Mrs Boyd’s reply to my letter on the above subject. She has thrown the blame on the County Council, and I leave it now to the members of that body and to the public decide whether those cattle were fairly treated or not. Mrs Boyd says that if I had visited the pound I would have seen the conditions. That is the very thing that I did. When passing on Tuesday evening, a week from the time they were impounded I saw the cattle being taken away, and never having seen them advertised, was surprised to see them there, and they were a most pitiable sight. The very fact that the police ordered them to be removed shows that I was neither telling lies nor Ignorant of the facts. My object in writing was not to blaipie the pound-keeper, but to bring this matter before the public. You must now realise that this is a most unusual case. The owner is a hard working man, trying to make a start on a bush section, and as it is too wet for bush work, lie has gone away to make a few pounds. Foolishly he left nobody in charge, and when he comes back he will find that he has lost the lot. Surely in a case like this the cattle could have been specially ejealt with. It is also unfair that Mrs Boyd should have, been compelled to keep them In her own private property, the result being that her feed is spoiled for the w'inter. Mrs Boyd gives me credit for being humane, but not having much sense. I admit that, but I have a fair amount of knowledge, and consulted Councillor Fraser before doing any thing else. I am quite convinced that this was a ca,se I was justified in bringing under the notice of the public.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER. 17 th May.
