The Political Labour League carried a motion calling the attention of the Premier to the. exorbitant retail prices of meat in Auckland anil urging the establishment of State meal shops. WELLINGTON, Jan. 31. The Registrar of Old Age Pensions declares that the Friendly Societies' Council is wrong in assuming that the recent amendment to the Old Age Pension Act gives power to penalise members of friendly societies By selling o(T benefits derived from such' societies against the amount of pension. Friendly societies' benefits are specially exempted by the Act. The training ship Sparrow will shortly lie placed in conunission, Captain 0. S. Hooper, U.N.U., formerly chief ollicer of the Hinctnofl, in command. The Government has decided upon the appointment of Mr T. if. Hamer as Under-Secretary for Mines in succession to Mi' H. Elliott ; of Mr P. S. May; Superintending Engineer for the Public Works Department as En-ginecr-in-Chief, vice Mr W. H. Hales, and of Mr P. J. O’Regan as chairman of the Wellington Conciliation Board. The ratepayers of Katori agreed to borrow £37,000 for an electric car service, street widening ami purchasing a recreation ground. Delegates from .various branches of the Civil Service to-night decided to form an association. A seven-roomed house in Majoribanks street, occupied by Mrs Dick and owned by Hudson, was destroyed by lire to-night. The insurance on •he furniture is £320 in the Royal Office. CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 31. The North Canterbury Education Board to-day appointed Mr E. K. Mu I gen (Auckland) inspector of schools. DUNEDIN, Jan. 31. A five-roomed house at NormanbV. belonging to Mrs Brownie, was destroyed by fire on Monday night. Insurances : £2OO on the- building and £loo on the furniture in the Alliance Office. All the family, except one son, who slept on the premises, were away holiday-making. Mr FratTk Kettle, accountant in the Christchurch Meal Co.’s Dunedin office, has been appointed out of 35 i applicants to the secretaryship of the ' Otago Dock Trust. , , 1
