Shop-Closing Case.
Per United Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 31, The Labour Department proceeded against W. Ross, tobacconist, for failing to comply with the early closing law. A requisition was prelented to the Minister by a majority of the tobacconists of the city in favour of observing certain mmrs, and in accordance with the Act the Minister issued a Gazette nolice. Ross and others failed to. observe 1 li' hours. The defence was (hat the requisition was not signed bv a majority of tobacconists who ven l tobacconists only, but that the majority was made up of Chinese fruiterers and hairdressers who sold tobacco and cigarettes. The order therefore was bad. The prosecution argued that although some of those who signed the requisition carried on other businesses as well as those of tobacconists still they vve-e tobacconists. Judgment was reserved.
