COMMERCIAL Market Report. Southland Times Office, ! 23rd Oct., 1903. | Tho collapse which has boen expected in the oat market for some timo past soems now to have nctually come topass. The latest vdviccs from A*.i.*-trulia are to the effect thut tho oat ina**ket has totally collapsed there, ur.d that the new crop in some parta is already Cuming into the market. Advices ha\a reached us of one vessel already loading in Melbourne for South Africa with vl,e new Benson's crop. The demand for N.Z. 0.-.ts for Australia has fallen off completely, and there nre absolutely no orders in the market at present. The Somerset finished loading yesterday at the BlulT 650 tons of fu.Q. for South Africa, and this, ye believe, completes the orders already p'nced for that market. although we understand enquiries ure still being made fc-r further parcels ut reduced rates. The Dunedin market, seems to be in even a worse state than the market here —a parcel of 300 to«s of C trade being offered there yesterday, we believe, at Is iid f.o.b , Dunedin — sacks in There is still a considerable quantity held in store at Bluff, and unfortunately the stacks of oats there are turning out in many cases in very bad condition, It has been found u-hen breaking down stacks of oats that were apparently sound and in good condition when taken into store that numbers of the bags havo gone oil condition, havo heated, and become mouldy, and altogether merchants are having a very difficult time at present in handling the purchases,- made earlier in the season. We believe some efforts are being made at the Bluff to treat the discolo-ured onts. so as to brighten and bring them up in condition, but whether the experiment will result in success or not depends entirely upon whether the expense -will, be justifiable under the present circumstances and the low prices ruling for oats. It is diflcult to lind purchasers for samples now offering in the market, as none of the local merchants seem disposed to offer for ever, bright samples, in the face of there being practically no outlet at the prices asked by farmers. We believe it is possible still to- work business with South Africa at reduced rates, and when farmers see their way to accept from ts to Is 2d por htishcf, at upcountry stations, probably business may be post-ihle, but In thp meant imp tbo oat business is practically at a deadlocVi hi the nbsence of any market, it is impossible to state u-hut may bo considered fair value for oats at upcountry stations at present.
