At the wool sales the Otekaike brand brought 7gd per lb. Twenty thousand miners at Chesterfield oppose the masters’ proposals. Many branches of the Union favour a 10 per cent, increase. Thirty English Socialists have been expelled from Belgium for inciting the Antwerp dockers to strike. The Czar intends to visit the Queen during the summer. The Empress of Abyssinia has feasted the Italian prisoners, especially honouring Gen. Albertone. The Powers object to the British Consul in Crete dispensing charitable aid provided by Great Britain, though Lord Salisbury and the Sultan are agreeable. Received 15th, 7.30 p.m. At the wool sales competition is keen, but prices are unchanged. Three , impis from separate points threaten the road between Buluwayo and Mafeking. In the Cretan Assemby the Christians demand a modification of the Haleppa convention. The Moslems oppose any restoration of rights, and the insurgents, who are armed, arc awaiting the decision of the Porte. The situation is regarded as alarming, as the Turkish soldiery seem desperate. July 15. Received 16th, 0.10 a.m. The Mines Co-operative (?) Company of New Zealand, with a capital ot L 505.000, has issued L 255.000 to the public, which was privately subscribed. At the wool sales chiefly New Zealand crossbreds were offered. Competition was brisk, and the highest prices were realised. “ Trida ” brought 6Jd ; “Tita,” 8-Jd ; “ Woodland,” B§d ; “ Braemar,” Is 2|d. A dismissed Parisian municipal officer fired two shots at President Faure, neither of which took effect. The would-be assassin narrowly escaped being lynched by an indignant crowd. On being arrested he declared that the revolver only contained blank cartridges, and that he merely wished to draw attention to grievances he believed he had against the Government. M. Faurejrernained quite calm throughout, and received a great ovation. The prisoner, who is believed to be insane, had previously been expelled from the Chamber of Deputies for throwing pamphlets to members.
Australian SYDNEY, July 15. The miners’ ballot tesulted in 947 for and 845 against the acceptance of the coal owners’ proposals. The strike has been officially declared off. Received 16th, 0.10 a.m. A diver working at the wreck of the Catterthun put up an unexpected record dive. A heavy ground surge carried him off the deck of the sunken vessel and landed him on the ocean bed, 30 fathoms deep. He was hauled up by those on the punt none the worse. The Civil Service Board have recommended certain reductions in the Lands, Mines and Treasury Departments which will effect a saving of L 32.000 annually. MELBOURNE, July 15. Mr J. N. McArthur has been elected to the Assembly for Villiers.
