PROBABLES v. POSSIBLES. The final trial match in view of the interprovincial contest rather unexpectedly resulted in the defeat of the Probables by two goals and two tries (16 points) to three tries (9 points). From stare to finish the Possibles forwards played the better game and in. almost every scrum they succeeded in taking the ball. In justice to the Probables it must be mentioned that thtir opponents played an extra man, bat even this disadvantage should not have made so much difference. In the back division some of the maroon wearers also found more than their equals. Soon after the kick off the Colours assumed the aggressive and good passing by their backs penned the Alarcons on the goal line and Pollock scored a try, but Russell failed with the kick at goal. From the kick out the Maroons rushed the ball to their opponents’ end of the ground and equalised matters by scoring near the corner flag, but the angle proved too difficult for the kicker. Before half-time Hui st and Donaldson scored for the Colours, Hurst placing a goal from Donaldson’- try. For the Maroons D. Mcßobie got well away from the centre of the ground and scored behind the posts, bnt his kick for goal did not succeed. The only score in the second spell was got by G. Ramsay (Colours) and Knucky was successful with the kick.

In the evening the Match Committee (Messrs A. F. Hawke, G. Williams, and R. Galbraith) selected the following team to represent Southland against Otago at Dunedin next Saturday : — Fullback : J. Manson (Pirates); three-quarters : B. Bain (Star), McLennan (Gore),D. Hurst (Winton); five-eighths : J. Best (Queenstown), S. Hirst (Orepuki); halfback : Pollock (1.F.0.); forwards: Anderson and Jenkins (Star), Mcßobie and Farquharson (Pirates). J. Mutin and Walsh (1.F.C.), Molloy and Bullman (Riverton). In years gone by Southland’s weakness was always in the back division, but the seven men who go north on Friday are expected to create a different impression.

BRITANNIA v. PIRATES (A Team.) A lob of interest was taken in this game to decide the junior premiership and also the cup presented by the New Zealand Cl tiring Factory Co. Unfortunately, shortly after the kick off drizzling rain commenced to fall, and lasted for the greater part of the game. The Britannia team left the field victorious, but their opponents played a hard stubborn game. For the winners Thomson and Ward scored tries in the first spell, but Stevens’ kick in each instance failed. The second spell was evenly contested, and towards the finish of the game Jacquiery scored for the Pirates, but the kick for goal did not augment the score.
