The French officials declare that Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, will be captured before the wet season sets in. The Tararua Creek Goldmining Co of New Zealand, with a capital of L 95.000, is issuing scrip to the amount of L 45,000. The quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is equal to 3,100,000 quarters, and "for the Continent 920,000 quarters. The American visible supply is estimated at 46,700,000 bushels. The Gulf of Siam’s shipment of Australian cattle averaged L2O apiece.

The Duke of Connaught has intimated that he does not desire to succeed the Duke of Cambridge as Commander-in-Chief. Perceval has received a report stating that the larger portion of each case of the apples ex Rimutaka were thoroughly rotten; remainder only filled six cases. The fruit was over-ripe when shipped and the venture may be looked on as a complete failure, but the condition of the fruit is not a fair test of the pumice packing and the moss-lined cases were worse. At a meeting of Edinburgh creditors of the Australian Deposit and Mortgage Bank there was considerable opposition to the adoption of the scheme and a show of hands was against its adoption. On the voting by value, however, it was carried by a large majority.

During a trial of the torpedo destroyer Charger with the Prince of Wales and Duke of York on board the crown of the fire-box cracked. The fires were instantly drawn to prevent the boiler bursting. The French wheat crop is low, atid it is expected that France will be compelled to make large purchases of foreign grain. Australian SYDNEY, Aug. 8. It is improbable that any member will resign in favour of Sir G. R. Dibbs. The Herald, referring to the New Zealand tariff proposals, says that comparing the present tariff with that proposed to be substituted there hardly seems to be much to gain by remissions or decreases. Many of the increases, if they operate at all, will do so against Australian exporters. However, the changes are not extreme; indeed it seems a cautious tentative policy has been adopted, but the disturbance of business may be dearly bought experience. The annual stock report shows that at the end of 1894 there were 56,977.000 sheep in the colony, of which 1,010,000 were long wools. Of the latter 657,000 were Lincolns and 330,000 Leicesters. The average percentage of lambing in the colony was 68. The cost of improvements display some large figures, the item of fencing alone amounts to L 68,000; water storage, L 12,274.000. At a meeting of the Cabinet this afternoon the following ten appointments were made to the Legislative Council:—Bachhouse, Bluncksby, Kettel, Lees, Pulsford, D. O’Connor, Hughes, Cullen, Smith and Fowler..
