The Self-Accused Murderer

(By Telegraph.) Auckland, May 14. Samuel Evison was charged at the Police Court, Hamilton, on his own confession, with having caused the death of a young woman at Nottingham, England, in 1882, by pushing her down, she striking her head on the coping-stone of an embankment of the River Tretit and rolling into the river. Prisoner was remanded for e : ght di>ys and will be brought up at Auckland on Tuesday next, inspector Hiokeoa has communicated with the Commissioner of Police, it is presumed with a view to cabling to the Scotland Yard authorities and making further investigation. Evison left England in 1882 in the steamer Ophir for Sydney. Ha next went to Brisbane, and then to Auckland. He has resided for some years in the neighbourhood of Hamilton, and has lately been working at his trade as a carpenter. In the township he was reap o ed, but w s very reserved. Evison told Constable Forbes that he could get no rest for thirteen years and was nearly driven mad. [The 8.8. Ophir was not built till 1893.]
