Cultivation and Produce

The following are the statistics of the counties of Southland and Wallace for the year 1891, as published in the Gazette of 14th May :—

Southland.— No. of holdings over one acre, 2486 ; of these, 1663 are freeholds, 530 rented, and 303 part freehold and part rented. Land broken up, not under crop. 32,033 acres, in wheat, 6600 acres, es& mated to produce 169,973 bushels. In oats, for green feed or hay, 11,809 acres; for gram, 76,735 acres, 2,638,609 bushels. In barley, 1188 acres, 36,061 bushels. In potatoes, 1202 acres, 6347 tons. In turnip* or rape, 54,934 acres. In other crops, 558 acres. Total acreage under crop, exclusive of grasses, 152,026 acres. In hay, 824 acres, 1171 tons. In grasses after having been broken up, 347,349 acrea. Grass-town lands not previously ploughed, 24,536 acre*. Southland. This is represented by 166 holdings, while the change in the nature of the tenure is still more remarkable, there being 295 fewer freeholds, 77 more rented, and 55 more under the heading of part free - hold part rented. There is an increase of about 44,000 acres of land in sown grass after ploughing and of 5000 acres in grass-sown land not previously ploughed. There is a decrease in the area under wheat and oats of 211 acres of the former and 3348 acres in oats for grain. Under oats for green feed there are 5300 acres less than last year. As might have been expected from the great impetus given to sheep-raising, there are 7750 acres more under turnips this year than in 1890.

Wallace. — Number of holdings over one acre, 598, of which 397 are freehold, 110 rented, and 91 part freehold, part rented. Land broken up but not uuder crop, 4742 acres. In wheat, 15,067 acres, 40,063 bushels. In oats for green feed, 4719 acres ; for grain, 15,952 acres, 563,558 bushels. In barley, 84 acres, 2110 bushels. Iv pit* toes, 202 acres, 994 tons. In turnips or rape, 16,284 acres. In other crops, 537 acres. Total number of acres under crop, 39,345 acres. In hay, 841 acres, 14,040 tons. In grass after breaking up, 139,873 acres. Grass sown, not previously ploughed, 19,108 acres. Grass seed— Cocksfoot, 1027 bushels; ryegrass, 37,272 bushels. In garden, 118 acres ; in orchard, 54 acres.
