MUNICIPAL.
Mr Bain introduced His Worship the Mayor to the Minister. His Worship said, as Mayor of the town, he wished to ask the Minister to set aside a corner of the block known as the Crescent Block for an endowment for the borough. Mr Rolleston thought that the past Government had acted veiy unwisely in giving away so many sites. Invercargill was destined to be one of the largest towns in New Zealand. He would much prefer seeing all the Government buildings in one block. He was surprised to see the Supreme Court bondings going up on such a site. The Mayor understood that the County Council had obtained a piece of the block he had asked for, and he thought he (the Mayor) would bring the matter under the notice of the Government. Mr Rolleston said that the reserve could only ba granted for a building, site, and moreover buildings would have to be commenced. The Mayor asked if it would be possible to build a large Town Hall with shops underneath. Mr Rolleston thought not; it would not look well to have, shops in connection with the offices. He suggested that His Worship should wait until the Council were prepared to call for tenders.
