Secretary : John W. Mitchell, Esq., Invercargill. Thio Couapn.ny is formed for the purpose of constructing under the provisions of The District Railways Act, 1877, a line of railway from the Waimatuku Flat on the Inver-cargill-Riverton Railway to the Nightcaps Coalfields, with a Branch to the Orawia Stream in the Waiau District, a distance in all of 40 miles. The provisional directors need only mention that to open up the immense coalfields in the vicinity of Mount Nightcaps by railway communication with Invercargill and Riverton, is the primary object of the promoters in the constructing of this line of railway. For many years it has been known to geologists and the public generally that the supply of coal at the Nightcaps is practically inexhaustible. The coal is of a superior quality, especially suitable for steam and gas purposes, and at a recent test of five samples of the best Otago coal for locomotive requirements, stood first on the list. Without railway communication these valuable coal deposits are practically inaccessible, whilst Invercargill and Riverton are large consumers of imported coal at high prices. From a careful investigation of the consumption of coal in and around Invercargill and Riverton, and for the Railways south of Clinton, the provisional directors estimate the demand will exceed 500 tons per week, and will constantly increase. The route of approach to the coalfields has received from the promoters the most careful consideration. From amongst a number of possible routes the present has been selected as opening up an immense area of the finest agricultural land, thickly populated by an industrious and thriving class of settlers ; at i the same time reducing the distance as much as possible between the coalfields and the .chief centres of population. This line is intended to staxt from the Waimatuku flat, at the new township of Waimatuku, a station on the luvercargillRiverton Railway, proceeding in a northerly direction through the magnificent plains of Waimatuku, Limestone, and Oreti, till it touches the south western corner of the deferred payment block at Heddon Bush, thence in a westerly direction, across Jacob's River to section 45 of block 4, Aparima Hundred ; thence in a northerly direction to the Nightcaps coalfields, with a branch from section 45 aforesaid to the Orawia stream in the Waiau district. In addition to the opening up of the magnificent land of the Waimatuku Valley, and Oreti and Limestone Plains, this railway will render available the vast tract of splendid agricultural land comprised fa the Aparima, Wairio, Merrivalo, and Waiau districts, estimated at not less than 200,000 acres. At the Orawia terminus on the west is situ* ated an immense deposit of Limestone of the finest quality, for which a large and increasing demand for building and farming purposes exists in all parts of the Colony. The vast forests of Woodlawand the Longwood, lying on either side of the proposed line, will likewise contribute another source of permanent traffic, as there is a constant and ever increasing demand for timber, both in town and country districts, as well as for exports at the adjacent Harbors of Riverton and the Bluff. The Provisional Directors feel confident that the advantages accruing from the construction of this railway are such as will ensure the ready and wayni support of j capitalists and the general public. The District Railways Act, 1877, guarantees I seven per cent, to shareholders on cost of j construction. The proprietors of the lands through which the line will pass have for the most part agreed to giverae land required free of cost, the others only charging a nominal price. v In view of the yeiy heavy traffic, the directors have determined to construct the line with 521 b rails, which they- pufpx>se*ordering
