GOVERNORS OF HIGH SCHOOL.
Editob Times— l have a great liking for the honest intelligent and sober working man, because when he is in his position, he is just as worthy Q* resp ec * an< * bonor as any other 'person, he is equal to the highest, but whp he gets out of his position, then I cannot retain this feeling, but there arises within me quite another one, which approaches to intense disgust, when he rushes from: his true standing to break the peace and injure the •welfare of society. . I have met such intelligent men amongst this class that I cannot understand why they are not more- enlightened in the mass. ; TKey" are forming a ! working men's club;. I/do not think they would like to see capitalists or prof essiohal men pushing themselves "thrbugh their dependants or clients into chief 'position in : their committees, and as they must be aware of the divisions of society, I '\jannot imagine that they can believe they are doing fairly in thrusting their special representatives into the management of the High School. Again, the working man is ■ftware that the laboring classes are congre- • gated in towns, and that" it is not to their interest to drive away the capital that supports .them, so I think they should be restrained 'in this matter, not only by intelligence but 'by prudence, for very few of those who have means, liketo be subject to the caprices of work'meri. Anything which upsets this order of society is an expensive joke, the evil may not "recoil on those few who chiefly promote and • enjoy it, but the weak multitude suffers and ought therefore to be aroused to consider its greater interests. A proposition has been made which has •'caused great astonishment. I hope we shall see a vigorous effort made by the working men to oppose it, for all our interests are finally the same. There are not many advantages in this town, and it would be a pity to see the few we have slipping away from society.— l am, &c, Old Citizen. 1 Invercargill, 20th August, 1878. -
