MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Municipal Council took place on Thursday evening. There were present, His Worship the Mayor and all the Councillors, except Councillor Lumsden, who is absent in Dunedin. One of the Council's officers having reported that Mr Kamsay, contractor, was trespassing on the Municipal Quarry Keserve, it was resolved that Mr Katnsay should immediately be prohibited from doing soA brief discussion, which arose out of a report sent in by the Inspector of Nuisances, ended in the Council resolving to set a site near the river beach in the neighborhood of the gasworks apart for the reception of rubbish deposits, not including nightsoil. It was resolved that the sum of £54, due to Mr Campbell for work and superintendence in connection with taking delivery of the gas plant, should be passed for payment. Councillor G-arlh-waite thought that Mr Campbell had not sufficiently specified the items of which the total claim was composed. Couucillor Cleave was of a similar opinion. Certain railway accounts for conveyance of the gas plant were ordered to lie over till next meeting. Messrs Davy and Hawke, builders, wrote asking leave to fence off a portion of the footpath to aid them in the erection of the Albion Hotel in Dee street, and wishing to know how much of the sidewalk they would be allowed to appropriate in this way. The request ! caused a good deal of discussion. Finally, it was resolved, on the motion of Couucillor Rose, seconded by Councillor Goodwillie, that in cases where hoarding is required in connection with the erection of new buildings, the builders can have the use of the whole width of the sidewalk on the condition t hot they erect a rail and lay down a wooden footpath outside. It was also resolved that persons wishing to avail themselves of the privilege created by the foregoing resolution could do so by paying 5s per month. The tender of J. Mclutosh, £6, for ploughing seven acres and a half of Corporation land was accepted. It was resolved that Mr Burwell should be asked to state when he thought tho gasworks building would, be completed. The salary of the Inspector of Nuisances was, by resolution, increased to £150 per annum; and it was resolved .that the services of the Engineer should be dispensed with from date. With reference to a letter from the Manager of the National Bank, it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Councillor Hall, seconded by Councillor Groodwillie, that Mr Grilles should be informed that the Council, while exceedingly anxious to clear off the overdraft, was not at present in a position to do so, but the debt would be liquidated as soon as possible. The Council then adjourned till Monday evening, when a special meeting is to be held to receive the valuation for the ensuing year.
