THE CRICKET MATCH.

♦ DUNEDIN Y. IFVEECABOILL. [By Electeio Telbgbaph.] Dxfkedin, Jan. 2. The match between Dunedin and Invercargill was commenced on the Oval yesterday afternoon. The weather was excellent. Owing to the lengthy passage made by the s.s. Express, which brought up the visiting team, and in order to give them an opportunity for a little practice, play was not commenced till 2 30 p.m. Invercargill haviug won the toss, the captain (Yorath) decided on taking the field. For Dunedin, Collinson and Marshall were the first to go to the wickets, and to face the bowling of Cook and Buchanan. Between them they quickly ran up a score, but not without giving some chances, Ooliinson haviug in the first over been let off by long stop, and later had a life from Wesney. In trying to run three for a hit by Collinson, Marshall was run out. The first wicket fell for 25. Allen joined Collinson, but was immediately bowled by Cook — two for 25. In the next over Collinson succumbed, having been well caught by Tarlton at cover point— three for 31. Tait and Turton each got half-adozea, Turton 7, when he was bowled by Brew-

ster, he being unable to see the ball, through the umpire getting in a line with the bowler's arm. Lambert scored 11 by 6ome smart hitting, when he was unfortunate enough to put his leg where his . bat should be. Clark and D. K. Rhodes (the latter not out) each made 21 by good play, the former playing with much care. The innings closed for 114, of which 12 were byes. For Invercargill, Dr Torath and J. Wesney appeared at the wickets, to the bowling of J. C. Pulton and Tait. Before any score was made, "Wesney was very stupidly run out by his captain, who was shortly afterwards clean bowled by Pulton. Tait meanwhile had been bowling a succession of maidens, though he was not well enough on the wicket to have justified such a result, and no runs getting, Collinson determined on a change at Fulton's end, where Lambert went on, and in his third ball found his way amongst Cross's timbers — three wickets for 14, and Invercargill's hopes anything but bright. Things got even worse for them as Brewster, though some time at. the wickets, had only scored two singles, when he retreated before one of Tait's. E. Wesney was run out, and Buchanan was well caught by Tait, off his own bowling, after getting two doubles, and Steuart, who, in spite of want of practice, played well, also retreated before one of Tait's with 4 to his credit. Borne was sent to the right about by Tait in the first ball. Bromley was also run out through hia own neglect, and Cook, before he could score, gave a chance to Morrison at cover point, which was taken, and the innings terminated for 34, being one short of the number required to enable Dunedin to again go to the wickets. Being past six o'clock, an adjournment was made. Dunedin Cricket Club, first innings — Collinson (captain), 1 1 2 1 3 1 2, c Tarlton, b Cook, 11 ; Marshall, 1113 2 3, run out, 11 ; Allen b Cook, 0. To-day it was past twelve before play commenced, and even then fielders had anything but a pleasant job, as it rained nearly the whole time. Invercargill at the outset was even more unfortunate than yesterday, wickets falling in rapid succession to the bowling of Tait and D. K. Rhodes. Cook, who played a good innings of 18 and not out, and Tarlton, managed to pull up the score to a creditable total, when the latter was run out. Wickets fell thus — 1 for 1, 2 for 5, 3 for 10, 4 for 13, 5 for 13, 6 for 13, 7 for 17, 8 for 17, 9 for 27, and 10 for 44, Dunedin thus winning by an innings and 34 runs to spare. Mr Bree umpired for Invercargill, and P. Russell yesterday and Kettle to day for Dunedin. After the match was over, the two teams adjourned to the Imperial Hotel, where lunch was laid, the chair being occupied by Collinson, and the vice by D. K. Rhodes. The toasts customary to Sucti occasions were proposed and duly honored. Invercargill, second innings — J. Wesney, b Tait, O. R. Wesney, 11, b Rhodes, 2. Brewster, 112, b Rhodes, 4.
