IN" announcing the establishment of a Journal to represent the interests of the Western • District of the Province of Southland, its promoters would take this opportunity for 'briefly explaining the objects they have in view, together with the course of nction they propose to adopt. : It will be their aim to co-operate with the two local Journals which have already been so successful in forwarding the development of the natural resources of the Province, and in advancing ' its • claims to a fair and equitable measure of Legisla- ' tive consideration, without which its material : advancement never can attain to the permanent : footing its numerous -capabilities are sq well adapted to secure. At the same time, such co-operation ; will always be conducted with a primary regard to tho Western District of the Province. : ' The Harbor of Riverton has a geographical j position that constitutes it the first port of call in ' the direct line of comnaunication between Victoria nnd the other produce markets of the Southern . Hemisphere ; this fact will receive the special attention of tho " Riverton Times," and no effort will be lost to impress upon the Provincial Government the necessity that exists for having it immediately plnced upon a footing that will recom- ■ mend it to shippers generally as a port of dis charge. ; The advantages Riverton possesses as affording ' the shortest and easiest access to the Wakatip goldfields — which have proved the richest yet discovered — will be brought prominently forward, so that every inducement will be afforded for Riverton ' and the Western District generally deriving the full extent of advantage to which its relationship to the Wakatip District entitles it to -sustain. j As it appears to be -the current belief that the « lead of the gold follows in the direction of the Western boundary of the Province — while this j Journal will be careful to lend every aid to the ! furtherance of (he pastoral and agricultural ] interests, it will not fail to be watchful of every movement, whether Provincial or otherwise, that may have for its object tho development of the j mineral resources. j The latest local, commercial, trade reports nnd ! price lists issued by the Home or other colonial markets, will b_e carefully selected, so that every opportunity will bo taken advantage of for placing ; the merchants of this district in a position to com- ' pt.'te with traders in oilier parts of the Province as well as those located in neighboring ProvincesThe Proprietors of the Ricerton Times need ; not remind those to whom they must look tor countenance and support, that the earrj'ing ; out of their object efficiently will entiiil a very large expenditure, and that, therefore, they expect nd vantage will be taken of their advertising columns to an extent that will warrant them prosecuting- (heir endeavors to a successful issue. At the same time, the Proprietors would beg lnavc to call the attention of the Merchants and 'Traders of Invercargill and other places to tire favorable medium this journal will afford tor opening up a connection with the residents of the Western District of the Province.
