Magistrate’s Court

INVERCARGILL DISTRICT. Sittings for 1907, fixed by the Stipendiary Magistrate, pursuant to “ The Magistrates’ Courts Act, 1893.

At the last meeting- of the Kaitanguta school committee Dr. Fitzgerald (chairman) in moving that a letter of sympathy be sent to the relatives of the late Patrick Welsh, paid the following tribute to the deceased ’ —“.Before starting business I would mention the death of one whom most of us knew and esteemed, one who used to sit at this table with us as a member of this school committee —I refer to Mr Patrick W'elsh. You have all read of the terrible disaster at the Nightcaps — a disaster that comes home to all of us, living" as we do in a mining communitv. I am certain that. Mr Welsh died bravely doing his duty at his post. There is not need to go to the battlefield, gentlemen, to find heroes. Wo find them in such places as the Nig-htcaps and at Kaitanigata, engaging in the most prosaic work of coal-mining-. As a member of the school committee I can testify to the work done by Mr Welsh. Person-! ally I can say I knew him better than many, and feel that I have lost a friend. I move that a letter of sympathy be passed and forwarded to the relatives of the deceased.’- Mr, Blackic, in seconding- the motion, endorsed the chairman’s remarks, andi the motion was passed in silence, the members standing.
