WINTON.

Large quantities of grain are being sent down from all parts of tbe district, and at most of the small sidings up. the line there is a great rush for trucks as the train arrives. The Southland section of the railways seems to be very inadequately supplied with trucks. In fact I was informed by one who knows something about the matter that Southland, in proportion to the traffic, had a poorer supply of rolling , stock—carriages, trucks, etc. —than any other section ■of our railways. The 4th'of June has been fixed for the date for holding'the grain, root,

and, poultry show, y : ‘The Aand ’Pi Society’have secured the Oddfellows’ hall which, with 1 a large marquee, will be used for. the occasion. It is intended to increase the amount of the prize money this year, and 1 fully as many specials as last time are expected. i The prizes will be allocated this week, and the schedules will be ready for distribution before the end of the month. They may be had on application to the secretary (Mr M. O’Brien.) The concert to be given on Wednesday evening by the Football and Cricket Clubs, combined, promises to be a great success. All the available local talent and several leading amateurs from town have been engaged, and a good sum should be realized by the Clubs. Winton has been often called a steadily-growing jplace —so steady, it has been remarked,, is its growth, that it can hardly be noticed, except by those who return after a long absence. However, lately we have had some acquisitions, the latest additions being a watchmaker, chemist, and hairdresser and stationer.
