It is thought probable that the missing boat trill have landed at some of the adjacent islands. The Day spring was commanded'by Captain Bibbing, for many years connected with the command of Melanesian mission vessels. He was noted as an able and careful officer, with great experience in the island trade, and it is considered probable that the disaster is due to a mishap to the machinery. F. E Rudder, a New Zealander, was acting as second officer of the Dayspring. > SUGAR GROWING. The northern river sugar growers are appealing to the Government to appoint a commission to enquire into the industry with a view to the removal of the duty, and also to enquire into,the position taken up by. the Colonial Sugar Company. DROUGHT IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Adelaide, October 23. The, South Australian Register has Started a fund in aid of distressed settlers in the Northern districts, amongst whom there is great destitution owing to protracted drought. Some are entirely without flour, and are living on bread made from bran and pollard. A large number of cattle are dying, and many farmers, in order to keep the few remaining alive, are turning them into their wheat fields. . STATISTICAL.
