Annual Horse Sale.

Messrs Wright, Stevenson and Co., (Dunedin), report having held their fourth annual sale of draught horses on the 6th inst., when they offered 70 draught mares and geldings and broken and unbroken colts and fillies. About 40 more had been entered from owners from the north, but owing to their having decided to sow larger areas of wheat than theyj originally intended, they required their horses for their own work. This, unfortunately, disappointed many who had come prepared to buy, but owing to these horses not being forward had to leave with their requirements only partially filled, and in a number of cases without getting a single horse. The demand right through the sale was brisk, more particularly for young heavy active upstanding geldings and for wellbred mares, The top price obtained for the latter was £2B 10s, secured by Mr W. Waddell, for a very handsome mare by Lord Iddlesleigh, the purchaser being Mr James M’Gill, of Waikouaiti. The highest price paid for geldings was £24, which Mr Alexander Bannatyne received as the price of the best stamp of Clydesdale horse we have seen in the yards for some time. The sale, taken as a whole, was a most successful one, and the values compared with what have been ruling of late may be quoted fully 20 per cent, higher. In all, we sold 60 horses, and as we have already stated, a much larger number could have been readily placed. Our sales were on account of the following well-known breeders : Messrs Alex. Bannatyne (Waikouaiti), Jas. Gow (Invermay), John Bruce (Allanton), Mee Bros.(Brighton), Mrs James Brown (East Taieri) Mrs O. Findlay (Romney Marsh), Messrs P. Howard (Ivy Bridge), Jas. Wright (Broomlands), D. Andrews (Mosgiel), Wm. Waddell (Waikaka), Jno. Grey (Milburn), T. Parker (Milton), J. Cullen (East Taieri), and others. At the request of some of our clients we shall hold another special sale in about a month’s time, the date and full particulars of which will appear in the advertising columns. The range of prices was as follows :—Superior heavy draught mares (4 and 5 years) £22 10s to £2B 10s ; do geldings do, £l9 to £24 ; fresh heavy draught mares (7 to 9 years), £ls 10s to £l7 10s ; do geldings do, £l6 to £22 ; medium draught mares and geldings (4 and 5 years), £l4 to £l7; aged do, £8 to £l2. The sale was continued on 7th inst., when we offered a large number of spring cart horses, hacks, and light harness horses. The demand for spring cart horses was keen, and we had no difficulty in disposing of all that were put forward at very good prices. There was, however, not so much inquiry for light horses, more especially for weedy sorts, which were almost unsaleable. The sorts most in demand were stout hacks and harness horses, for which owners would accept £8 to £ll. There was also some inquiry for strong upstanding buggy horses, but of this class there were no really good sorts forward. The range of prices to-day was as follows Strong buggy horses, £l2 to £l6 ; strong hacks and harness horses, £8 to £ll ; old and inferior, £2 to £5 ; spring cart horses, £lO to £l6. At these

three prices we sold 35 horses on account of Messrs Godfrey Foster (Milburn), 0. Howard (Ivy Bridge), A. Barron (Mosgiel), J. Cullen, jnr. (Greytown), A. Rutherford (Kaikorai), James Wright (Broomland), James Wyllie (Outram), and others.
