(By Telkqbaph.) AUCKLAND. August 15. Information has been received of the- death of Dr dhortland at Plymouth, England, aged 81. He was brother, of Mr Willoughby Shortland, who was Acting-Governor of Bew Zealand on the death off Governor Hobson, By. the Upolu, from Tonga and Samoa, were shipped four boats' for the islands. On the last trip she took a number of boats from Auckland boat-buildera. This industry is rapidly growing. The Board of Education have ogam rejected Bishop Luck’s application that the Board’s inspectors inspect the Boman Catholic schools, and informed him that no private schools are inspected by the Board’s inspectors. George John Baeton dropped in a fit on the Karangahapo road, and died in the hospital of cerebral apoplexy. CHRISTCHURCH, August 15. At the Supreme Court to-day George Gorrie, charged with a fraudulent breach of the' Chattels Transfer Act, was acquitted. Thomas Ooupar was sentenc ed to 16 months imprisonment for forgery. Charles Hams was acquitted on a charge o£ housebreaking.

At the inquest on the body of-Mrs Skim* ming, a verdict was returned that the deceased came by her death through a wound in the head, but there was not sufficient evidence to show how the wound was caused. At the inquest on the body of her husband, Lowry Skimming, a verdict of felo de se was returned.
