Fatal Accident

CHRISTCHURCH, August 14,

A fatal accident occurred on the New Brighton tram yesterday afternoon, the victim being a young man named Fred. Renner, eon of the proprietor of the Kaikoura Star. It appears that he with others was standing on the back platform of the front car ; on rounding a sharp curve Renner let go his hold on the rail and struck a match to light a cigarette ; having no support a jerk of the car threw him off, and in endeavouring to save himself he caught hold of the rail, and was thrown between two carriages, the result being that the wheels went over him before the tram could be stopped. The injuries he received were of a shocking character. Bis left arm ; was severely mangled, the shoulder blade crushed and collar bone broken, and several ribs were fractured. He was taken to the hospital and the arm amputated at the shoulder- He rallied somewhat about 8 o’clock, but gradually began to sink and diod at 12 30. Deceased was apparently about 22 years of age.
