THE ARGO EXPLOSION.

i The Government analyst stated at the i inquest yesterday that the coal from the mine which loaded the barque Argo is of a fiery character and contained fire damp. It would, he said,probably be more likely to explode than any other coal. A CAPTAIN CONDEMNED. The Marine Board has found that the steamer Hilda, which struck the reef off Port Hacking, was lost through the default of Captain Phillipson, who has been requested to [show cause why his certificate should not bo suspended, TAXATION—A I PROTEST. Melbourne, July 25. The Chamber of Commerce has resolved against the imposition of primage duties and income tax as proposed by the Government, and has decided that the course damanded by public policy is a reduction of expenditure to the level of the national income. POLITICAL. In view of the decision of the Govern-1 ment to abandon the 3 per cent primage I duty, and reduce the Customs estimates I by nearly £IOO,OOO, the Opposition caucus has determined to adopt a waiting policy. SMALLPOX. Thursday Island, July 25. The steamer Chinghu has arrived from Hong Kong with two cases of smallpox on board. ,
