THEATRE ROYAL.
.PUGILISTIC EXHIBITIONS.
• An exceedingly poor audiehbe ,”attended the’ Theatre last night)*' Tile usual display of local talent took place, and some very smart amateur sparring Was'exhibited. The - 'set-to- .between Slade and Jem Mace was, of course, the piece de resistance. The Canterbury man is powerful, active and skilful, and has an extremely showy style. But the superiority of Mace appears in'bis Being calm and' unruffled after •.,. successive rbunds, while his opponent is blown and flushed. If we mistatake not, Mr Jem Mace would be most dangerous at the end ‘of the battle. Last night a slight fracas , occurred ' at the stalls entrance. Somebody knocked somebody else ■ down and the friends of the knocked-down made a demonstration against the knocker-down. The appearance of , Detective Kirby on the scene induced a certain mildness of tone on everybody’s part, and when somebody .circulated the. blood-curdling rumour that Jem Mace and H. Slade were coming out to settle any differences there might be among the crowd, everybody “ went for ” the door, and the row wound up as directed in the plays, with exeunt omnes.
