RODNEY JERSEY BREEDERS' CLUB.
The Club's female sale last Thursday was unique for two reasons—(l) a demonstration of exceptional quality by Mr ti. Dule ; (2) a deplorable lack of competition by a large gathering of farmers.
Mr Dale first of all demonstrated on all year old pedigree cow belonging to Aii- It. Heudeison. He mentioned the tliroa wedge shapes. Then rapidly jummjil over the points, showing wheie thu oovv under his band was weak or good. He stressed the importance of a good wither, a straight tup line with the vertebrae well denned, even down into the tail, good spring of rib, the ribs wide apart and flat, of good ringing bone, quite pointed hip bones with jalso a ringing sound, good width be tween hip bones, pin bones and stifles, which should be in v line as near as possible, thin thighs with plenty of room for a capacious udder. In answering a question Mr Dale mentioned the stupidity of quito a lot of buyers who preferred fawns —there was nothing in colour whatsoever. The fashion at present demanded a -splash of white. Mr Dale then went over Mr E. J Woodcock's bull, a son of Vivandiere's Prince and of Waipiko Gerda, who has a c.o.r. of 710 at 3 years This bull was splendid from his shoulder back and as there were several of his sons and daughters there who were very pleasing, it looks as if Mr Woodcock will be repaid by his enterprise. Mr Dale also went over a youug bull leoeutly purchased by Mr Henderson from Mr F. W. Cornwall, who is considered the best judge of a Jersey in New Zealand. This bull also should leave his mark in the district. As the time for the demonstration was limited to less than an hour, Mr Dale promised to come up again during the winter. Probably there will be a demonstration one afternoon during July at Mr W. T. Wedding's farm.
There are several reasons to account for the dull sale. It ha* been n poor season for Feed, so the young stock ha 3 not grown as well as usual ; thoy were also rather backward. • At the present time, too,, there is little feed about and last of all there is very little money and very little credit. Only heifers close to profit sold "reasonably well. Mr Mark Fletcher topped the sale with a particularly pleasing heifer, and Mr W. Sharp had the next best run.
