WORKS IN RODNEY COUNT

ENGINEER'S REPORT.

The County Engineer reported at the last meeting of the Rodney County Council as follows :— :. - v

Smith has completed the formation': work the grader on the MahuTangi, Head's road, also the grader work authorised at last meeting, be-^ tween Warkworth and Strongman's." In regard to the vote Warkworth to Mahurangi Heads, £200, the Public Works Department state that it was intended for formation only, and. they ask for fresh proposals, excluding the item for metalling. I have procured pipes for the Sandspit road. Smith has about completed his contract at Paley's Bridge. In regard to the bridge at Otway's, it appears that no timber -can be got in the locality suitable for stringers, hence the work is delayed. Regarding the Mahurangi Heads wharf, the plans have not yet been approved of ; I have received a letter to the effect that only £350 appears on the estimates this year, so it will therefore be necessary to cut down the work to the amount of the money available.

The suggested alterations to the Te Hana Bridge were made to meet the requirements of the Public Works Department and the plans sent forward, but no reply has been received up to the present. I have had interviews and correspondence with the Railway Dept. in regard to landing material for the Te Hana bridge, and have now got permission. This will save carting 200 tons of material from Te Hana station. The first consignment was to have gone up by train yesterday, and another lot is to follow on Saturday. Mr Wilkins is out there, and will start making piles at once.

I visited Leigh and arranged with Mr Matheson to1 get men to widen the road to Leigh wharf. They made a good start, but I hear that the foreman took them off the road when the
