SHRAPNEL.
Shrapnel is really a flying- cannon, ay, ich shoots its charge while in flight or explodes on contact. Its speed of five hundred thousand feet per second is produced by a pressure of from thirty to thirty-five thousand pounds per square inch from the powder that expels it from the grun. .Its bursting" charg-e exerts a pressure of from twenty to twenty-five thousand pounds per square inch. The metal of its base has a tensile strength of one hundred and thirty-five thousand pounds to the square inch and an elastic limit of one hundred and ten thousand pounds per square inch.
