"Stealin' twelve chick'ns and five ducks, sah i" appealingly answered the dusky one, as he sadly rolled up his great black eyes. "But I ain't stealed 'em," he went on, growing indignant, "and I wants a lawyer-man lto tell tho judge so, sah." "Ah, lawyers cost money!" said the chaplain. "Have you any, Ernest?" "No, sah." ' "Anything you can sell to raise money?" "On'y twelve ohick'ns an' five ducks, sah!"
