HALCOMBE NOTES.

(From Our-Own Correspondent.)

The annual school bazaar came off on Wednesday afternoon and evening. There was a good attendance of the public, business was keen, and as a result tbo-funda of the local school committee should be materially strengthened. The stall holders were:—Needlework-, Mesdames D, and K. Anderson; home industries, Mrs C. Paske; lollies, Mrs Say well and Miss Hausen; fruit salads, Mrs C. Nitzke: soft drinks, Mrs Woodcock; Mrs Clapham and “Mrs Ellery had charge of the tea room. During the evening a number of competitions were brought off. Mr E. Wishnowsky won Mrs Dudding’s cake; Mrs W. McLennan, Mr G. Woodcock’s cake ; Mr G. Smith, Mrs ,T. Noilson’s cushion ; Mr G. Jessop got a shaving outfit, and Mr L. Wishnowsky got a big doll. Prizes were allotted to various ladies for cooking, but as particulars were not forthcoming I am unable to give details. Mr J. Morrison returned thanks on behalf of the School Committee. During the evening the Halcombe Band played selections. The gloomy predictions of Professor Porta and Mr Clement Wragge have caused quite a flutter of excitement, and some nervous people are looking for ward in fear and trembling to the dreadful horrors that are to overtake the world on the 17th inst. What with prophets and profiteers the outlook for the future does not seem too rosy. Quite a number of people in Halcombe will be interested to learn that Mr Harry Hill, who gained his proficiency at the losal school and subsequently was on the staff of a newspaper in Palmerston, and later worked for the Keilding Star, has been appointed Advertising Manager of the Melbourne Herald, at a salary of £6OO a year. The Kakariki Freezing Works begin killing operations this week. Talking of killing, a writer in an Australian paper says he believes John Burnett, now buyer at Adelaide market for the Hither butchering firm, is the champion killer and dresser in the meat industry. Old Mr William Either had a great regard for Burnett, and some years ago put up £IOO for a competition between him and one Meyers, of Melbourne. Burnett knocked down and dressed eleven bullocks in an hour, and the Melbourne man was only three minutes behind. The winner’s feat was the more remarkable when the weights of the competitors are considered —Burnett scaling about Bst against his opponent’s 14st. Seems like a fairy tale.
