The new St, Lawrence bridge, erected on the site of that which colapsed in 1907, was partially wrecked when the central span, weighing live thousand tons, the largest cantilever in the world, collapsed when being floated in position. It sunk and a numbel' of workmen were drowned.

STEAMER TRAFFIC SUSPENDED.

Received September 13, 11.40a,m. Ottawa, Sept. 11. Ninety men were thrown off the central span of the bridge as it was being floated into position. Some bodies have been recovered, and spectators on the banks rescued numbers in boats. The spaa fell two hundred feet and lies at the bottom of the river, and is believed to be irrecoverable. Arrangements were complete for opening the bridge in a few weeks. The structure was intended to shorten the route between Montreal and Eastern Canada. Dominion Cabinet members saw the catastrophe. Steamer traffic is completely suspended. The St. Lawrence death roll is given at twenty.
