A dull threatening morning gave place to a delightful day for Hunterville Sports yesterday, and the Domain was well arranged and the ground in good order. Proceedings went with a swing and the various stewards are to be congratulated on their businesslike methods. The attendance was jjot quite so large as last year, and the takings totalled £24 10s, which must be considered highly satisfactory and gratifying to the Club, The ms in feature of the day was the horse events and some fine beasts competed. The judges’ decisions “were very popular and Mr Jack Brice’s win in the Hunters’ Competition was heartily applauded. With this win with Shamrock he secures outright the handsome silver cup. He intimated that he would present a cup to replace it for next year’s meeting. The jumping and riding was of a high standard. Mr J. Hartley secured Mr W. J. Bartlett’s special prize, a silver mounted hunting crop, for the best rider. Another event which attracted much attention was the sheaf-tossing, and the well-known competitor, Mr I. Jefferson, of Upper Tutaenui, again proved the winner with a fine throw. Afterwards he gavo an exhibition throw, and easily put the sheaf over when the bar was raised another two feet. The children wore very well looked after, and besides many races two large tins of sweets were scrambled for. The patron, Mr Edward Newman, M.P., attended, and was very pleased with the meeting. Marten Brass Band was present under Conductor Orozier and discoursed lively music. The Club is fortunate in having such capable officials, especially the Secretary, Mr F. J. Marshall.
