Rangitikei Advocate. TWO EDITIONS DAILY SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1913 EDITORIAL NOTES.
SO far as can be gathered from the Ministerial party who have just visited this district, the main reason why the extension of the tramway to Marton does not receive immediate favourable consideration is that the Railway Department fears that it will lose revenue at present derived from the goods traffic via Palmerston North, and that the increased traffic from extension of the tramline will not be sufficient to recoup this loss. It will tlierefpre be necessary|ior the local bodies and others interested to show the Department that instead of a loss it will make a profit. So far as Mr Herries' reference to the necessity of studying Dominion interests instead of local interests is concerned, we may point out that if the interests of localities are promoted the whole Dominion will gain. We counsel all interested to redouble their energies in the direction of securing this extension, and also making Foxton port available, the first requirement towards which latter is handing over to the Harbour Board either the wharf or some other endowment which it can proffer as security for a loan.
