RONGOTEA HORTICULTURAL SPRING SHOW.

It was [most unfortunate for the Society that weather conditions have been so unfavourable of late. The Show opened on Wednesday, and on the night preceding and on day of Show rain fell in torrents. The attendance was good, however, but there was a decided falling off in entries. This was to a degree counteracted by the excellent.quality of exhibits. They were finer than ever. The exhibits in roses were particularly fine, the judge declaring that the champion light rose (“Mrs David McKee”) exhibited bv Mrs Fred Howard, Marton, was fit for exhibition in any show in the Dominion. There were many pleasing features in connection with the Show. Exhibitors came from a much wider field than before —Pending, Marton, Sandon and Carterton, and the rivalry shown by local residents indicates that they are not going to let the Show run down. As further proof of this the President (Mr H. H. Hunt) collected on Wednesday the sum of eight guineas from 14 gentlemen as a starter for a ten-guinea trophy to be awarded for daffodils at next bulb show. A strong feature, too, is the catering for children, for whom there are numerous classes, and the yougsters appreciate this. Their entries were big. Last year’s champion youngster was A. Hunt, who having reached the age limit (14 years) competed in the senior classes this year with great success. This year’s champion in the juvenile classes was A. Seddon. His wins were numerous, and the exhibits a credit. All exhibits were admirably staged. Mrs B. S. Penny was again a big exhibitor and prize-winner, gaining the president’s prize for most points in Show. She was also an untiring worker, which is much more than can he said of a number of the committee who preferred leaving the work to a willing few. The secretary (Mr P, G. Seddon) deserves congratulation for the admirable arrangements, and the promptitude and courtesy with which he carried out his duties. General regret was expressed at the unavoidable absence of the member fcr the district, Mr E. Newman. The following were the judges:—Pot plants, Mr A. J. Sliailer; vegetables and fruit, Mr A. M. Wighton; out blooms, Mrs J. R. Porster-Pratt; domestic, Mesdames X A. Nash, J. McKelvie, W. Phillips { decorative, Mesdames Perry and Baddeley, and fancy work Mesdames Owen and Lethbridge.
