DEATH IN ENGLAND

CORPORAL BASIL MARSHALL-INMAN Former Matamata Rugby Football Representative Cabled advice was" received on Friday of the death on active service in England of Corporal Basil Marshall-Inman, a well-known Matamata Rugby football representative of a few years ago, who was serving with the New Zealand Forestry Unit. Corporal Marshall-Inman, who was 30 years of age, was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. I. MarshallInman, of Tirau. He was born at Raglan, but his parents settled in Tirau when he was quite young, and he attended the Tirau School. Prior to joining up, Corporal MarshallInman was on the staff of the Bartholomew Timber Company Limited, Te Whetu, near Putaruru. Corporal Marshall-Inman was a well-known and popular athlete in the Matamata and Putaruru districts. He was also a very keen cricketer, and made some notable scores for the Tirau club. He wielded “ a straight bat,” as he did in his every-day life, having had the advantage of the coaching of his father, who was a college representative at Cambridge University and who played for Taranaki against a touring Australian team in the early days. A sister is Mrs. R. Dunlop, of T'okoroa, wife of a wellknown Waikato East tennis player.
