PUTARURU HOME GUARD

HAND GRENADE THROWING- ' Battle Of Putaruru At the weekly parade" of the Putaruru Home Guard, held on Saturday, the platoon was divided into three sections, one for machine-gun drill, another for rifle exercises, and another for grenade-throwing. The throwing of hand grenades was a great improvement on the throwing of the previous week, the average improvement per section being about 10 per centum. The highest individual scores were obtained by Corporal C. V. Pearce and ■Guardsman R. McGeeAbout 40 men were present, Platoon Commander D. C. Freeman being in charge. At the conclusion of the parade the officers of the platoon inspected territory north of Putaruru which is to be used for the coming “ Battle Of Putaruru.” The whole of the Tamehana Battalion will participate in this battle..
