RECONDITIONING A ROAD

NEW PROCESS USED Bitumen Work Near Waitoa A start was made last week by Messrs. W. S.. Goosman with the reconditioning of 3A miles of the bitumen surface of No. 1 road between Waitoa and No. 4 road. No. 1 road was tarsealed many years ago, but the subsidence of the foundations made the surface corrugated.

The Piako County engineer (Mr. B. H. Horner) says this job is of special interest to engineers, because a new system of road improvement is being demonstrated. A layer of metal is being put on the old , bitumen surface, followed by “ penetrating ” treatment with tar. (Continued in Next Column)

The thickness of the layer varies with the bumps and hollows in the existing road. The reconditioned road is expected to need no further maintenance for six years.

This system has only been tried by engineers during the past year. Previously the task of making a bitumen road smooth entailed much greater expense.
