Mr. D. J. Warren, of Messrs. ITampson, Bell and Lochhead, is in camp at Rotorua with the 4th Battery New Zealand FHeld Artillery. The camp breaks up on Saturday.
A Putaruru resident, commenting upon the recent burning accident, suggested this week that the burning of fat under similar circumstances is always dangerous. The safety means are to immediately close the oven door. This will immediately subdue the flames.
Thirteen was a lucky number for racegoers at Te Aroha who invested on Chang which scored a surprise win. He was number 13 on the card, he was 13th favourite in a field of 13, the jockey, S. Tremain, scored his 13th win for the season, and the amount of the win pool on the was £1313.
Mr. R. K. Garland, the Matamata Jersey breeder, followed up his win at the Franklin Show by gaining further honours at the Auckland A. and P. Show last week. His bull Brampton Standard You’ll Do was the champion Jersey bull of the show and was first in the class for bull three years or over.
Considerable merriment was experienced at the Putaruru railway station on Saturday by the antics of a number of territorials who were returning from camp at Rotorua. A few of them were apparently in high spirits and were inclined to take possession of the station. After dancing ring-a-ring-a-rosy round a lady they had a sham fight, treating two stray dogs as moving targets. The dogs were considered to have been “ killed.”
At a recent local body meeting in the Matamata district a member, commenting on the cost of labour, remarked that a farmer who needed a family for sharemilking received 20 applications for the position. The wages asked for ranged from £3 10s to £5 10s a week, and the farmer engaged the family which asked for the lowest wage, but he increased the amount to £2O a month, as he thought the amount asked for was too low. He was very satisfied with the family.—Matamata Record.
