THE HIGH COST OP LIVING. It's in everyone’s mouth just now—in both senses of the words. Yes, foodstuffs are beyond doubt rising and likely to do so while the war lasts. Meat is about Is lb. Well the best remedy is to eat less meat and more vegetables. New Zealanders and Australians probably eat more meat per head than any other nation in the world, possibly because twenty years ago you could buy a sheep for 2s 6d. You can’t now. You can produce your own vegetables by simply spending a few shillings in seeds and your spare time. It’s about the healthiest exercise of all, too—ask your doctor. Most vegetables can be 1 grown where produced at less than a penny per lb, so you can count up what you can save; besides they will be fresher and better flavoured. Most people and practically all hotels serve too much meat and not enough vegetables, and these are often badly cooked. That’s wasteful. It’s the duty of every man and woman to • produce the maximum amount of something useful. It's quite easy for everyone to garden successfully, but you must grow the best seeds J that are to be had.
