SHORTAGE OF SHIPPING.
A NOTE OF WARNING.
Four out of the five ships running between New Zealand and the West Coast of America have been commandeered for Imperial purposes. In making this statement to a Wellington Post reporter on Saturday afternoon, the Acting-Prime Minister (Sir James Allen) said that unless- the shipbuilding programme of the Empire makes up for the shortage caused by submarines there will probably be still fewer ships trading to Now Zealand. Nothing, he added, should be sent from New Zealand that was not absolutely essential, in order to preserve space for things that were. As to the producers, he said that it was their duty to look ahead and not pile up stocks of perishable materials which there might bo difficulty in getting away. There was no information to hand which would justify him in frightening people, but the public could read what was published and form their own conclusions.
