The Soudan Campaign.
Cairb, October 4. The Dervishes attempted to retake Gedareff, but were badly repulsed. A contingent from Omdurman reinforces Gedareff to enable Lieutenant-Colonel Parsons to clear the province of Dervishes. It is believed here that Captain Maichand will shortly evacuate Fashoda. Officers from there report that Marchand’s position was cri ical when he was relieved. He was entrenched on a tongue of land, and was surround dby menacing natives. Many of his own followers had deserted. The rest were delighted when rescued. Captain Marchaod was informed that such ineffective occupation was untenable. October 5. The Cameron Highlanders have returned from Fashoda to Cairo. The British post at the former place blocks Captain Marchand’s access to the mainland. Four of Captain Marchand's officers have died, while the Singalese force are suffering from berriberri fever. London, October 5. M. Delacasse, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, has been allowed by Sir Herbert Kitchener to communicate with Marchand by means ot a British gunboat.
