AUCKLAND MINING DISASTER. Auckland, September 28. Graham’s dead body has been found in the Jubilee Mine. He was evidently suffocated while attempting to escape The mine is blocked to extinguish the nre, and it will be a week before the mine is opened again. GOOD YIELDS OF GOLD. Auckland, September 28. The Waihi return for the month is 6,762 tons of stone crushed for gold valued at £21,151, being an average return of £3 2s 6d per ton The total yield from the mine to date is £895,744. The Komata reef return is 410 tons with a yield of gold valued at £1,598. The Waitakouri Company crushed 1,150 tons, which returned £5,522 worth of gold. Another haul of picked stone in the Kapanga mine by the tributers is valued at £509. BARKS WITH CURATIVE PROPERTIES. Wellington, Septenber 28. Mr Freyberg, the ex-Government timber expert, who has been collecting specimens of' barks with a view to their utilisation, states that a mountain variety from the West Coast has wonderful curative effects upon throat complaints The supply is pratically inexhaustible. Mr Freyburg is about to send some large samples to medical specialists in London with a view to having a (borough test in a more rigorous climate. He thinks it may lead (o the bark being placed in the .British pharmacopea. and so create another opening ior the undeveloped

COLLEGE APPOINTMENT. Nelson, September 28. At a meeting of the College Governors today. Mr W. S. Littlejohn, M.A., was appointed Principal. There were fifty-seven applications, including gentlemen residing in New Zealand, Australia, England, and elsewhere.
