THE PELORUS GUARDIAN, AND MINERS' ADVOCATE. FRIDAY, JUNE 21th, 1895. The Governor’s Speech.

As will be seen from a perusal of the Governor’s Speech in this issue, ample food is supplied and legislation contemplated for a very prolonged session. The general outlook of the Colony, which occupied a long and important part of the speech, certainly should infuse fresh life into business and hope among the people. That the Colony is only just beginning to emerge from the all inactivity of past years is known to all, and still the position of the Colony, as laid before us in the Speech, is most encouraging. Ministers evidently are not afraid of their actions during the recess. Almost all their actions of importance are noticed, and the gauntlet fairly thrown down for a close criticism of their actions. Prospective legislation of the usual “ large order ’’—too large altogether, to our minds, unless Parliament is prepared to sit for six months, and even then that space of time would not suffice to thoroughly debate, revise, &c., one-half of the measures promised to be submitted. With the measures themselves we shall deal when they are before us, but the piece tie resistance of the session will undoubtedly be the proposed new Local Government Bill; a wiping-out of many of the smaller local bodies will not be accomplished without an effort, but we hope the measure will be approached without party feeling, and a good workable Act result. Altogether our readers have in the Governor’s Speech a very hopeful resume of the Colony’s condition, and a choice and varied bill a fairs for their entertainment during tie next six (?) months.
