MOUNT COOK. Timaru, June 8. The Government has taken over the Hermitage at Mount Cook from the Proprietary Company, who have lost considerably over it. ACTION FOR DAMAGES. Christchurch, June 8. The case of Pyne and Wife v. Black, Beattie and Co., in which the plaintiffs claimed damages, on account of injuries sustained by Mrs Pyne through the fall of a roll of matting in defendant’s shop, was heard before Mr Justice Denniston and a special jury of twelve to day. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiffs, and awarded /200 damages to the husband, and /400 to his wife.
THE MIDLAND RAILWAY,
Wellington, June g. The manager and another officer of the Midland Railway Company have resigned their positions, and have taken service under the Government. All the takings are being lodged to the public account. The Government is advised that there is sufficient authority under the Act to proceed with the works, but as the Company declines to hand ewer the plans, fresh surveys would have to be made.
